DESCRIPTION:Wednesday 22nd July\, 2:00 am to 5:00pm. The walk is run as par
t of the Northumberland Coast AONB series of geo-diversity walks. \nWalk s
ummary: “Stuff your eyes with wonder\, he said\, live as if you'd drop dea
d in ten seconds. See the world. It's more fantastic than any dream made o
r paid for in factories.” (Ray Bradbury\, Fahrenheit 451)\nThe temperature
at which the Whin Sill was injected between the kilometre thick layers of
Carboniferous sedimentary rock was over double that at which paper will c
ombust\, the Fahrenheit 451 of Ray Bradbury's dystopian novel. At over 100
0 degrees Celsius the Whin Sill magma would have glowed a bright yellow\,
painful to the eyes\, albeit this would have been impossible to do as the
molten rock remained trapped a kilometre or so underground. \nThis walk ex
plores the rocks on this beautiful part of the coast which give the eviden
ce for this story\, showing what happens when hot magma and cold rock meet
. The walk will also also help to explain the story of how the 300 million
year old roots of Bamburgh Castle came to provide such a nicely defensibl
e landform.\nDo I need to book? This event has to be booked in advance. Th
 e walks are “pay-what-you-feel” - I respectfully suggest £15 for this half
day event. If this is not affordable for you – pay less – no questions as
ked. Equally\, if you are able to pay more\, this will help me to ensure t
he walks are sustainable. As before\, family members under 16 are very wel
come and no donation is needed. The walk will be limted to 20 people. To b
ook a place on this walk please email me with your name and telephone numb
er and I will send details of where to make your donation. Once you have m
ade the payment I will confrm your place. There will be no refunds for thi
s walk.\nWhere do we meet? We meet by the War Memorial under the Castle. G
rid reference NU 184 351 ///liver.enveloped.snail\nHow long is the walk? T
his walk will be approximately 5 km and will involve some scrambling acros
s rocks on the foreshore. Strong boots are recommended and some may find w
alking poles helpful. \nWhat else do I need to know? Full details will be

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 29th September\, 10:00 pm to 1:00pm. The walk is run as
part of the Northumberland Coast AONB series of geo-diversity walks.\nWal
k summary: The massive forces unleashed as the earth's continental crust m
oves around driven by mantle convection are made all too obvious when even
ts such as the Nepal earthquake or that around Amatrice in central Italy h
appen. These forces do seem rather distant on the geologically quiet and b
eautiful coast around Howick with not even the smallest earth tremor to di
sturb the butterflies feeding on the sea campion. The evidence in the clif
f face here at Howick tells a different story though\, with massive slabs
of rock moving many tens of meters and igneous rock being injected into th
e cracks between them. Signs that in the Carboniferous period some 300 mil
lion years ago that the Northumberland coast was in closer proximity to co
ntinents colliding. \nThis walk will explore the sequence of sedimentary a
nd igneous rock which make up this beautiful coastline and paint a picture
of what was going on here about 300 million years ago.\nDo I need to book
? This event has to be booked in advance. The walks are “pay-what-you-feel

ase let me know\, send me your bank details and I will refund the cost of
the walk. Refunds will only be given if you get in touch prior to the walk
.\nWhere do we meet? We meet at the parking spot on the bend by Sea Houses
Farm just south of Howick - head past the entrance to Howick Hall\, east
towards the coast and after about 800m the road takes a right-angle bend t
o the left\, the parking spaces are on the right by this bend. Grid refere

DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 7th July 2:00 pm to 5:00pm. The walk is run as part of
the Northumberland Coast National Landscape series of geo-diversity walks.
\nWalk summary: Cocklawburn Beach is not only a stunnigly beautiful beach
but it also contains a wealth of fossilised ancient life preserved within
the layers of rock mapped out across the beach. This walk will take you o
ut onto the limestone shelves and elsewhere in search of fossils along wit
h an explanation of what they were and how they lived.\nWhen these layers
of rocks were laid down about 350 million years ago this was a large shall
ow basin which over hundreds of thousands of years alternated between a de
ltaic environment (with river-sands\, lake-mud and coal-swamps) and a shal
low tropical sea. In these tropical seas there lived a wide variety of sea
  creatures including crinoids\, brachipods\, corals\, orthocones\, fish an
d trilobites\, and their shells and bones in their millions sank to the bo
ttom of the sea to form lime rich layers. Over time these were turned into
the hard limestone layers which delimit Cocklawburn Beach. The remains of
these sea creatures can easily be found if you know where to look. \nDo I
need to book? This event has to be booked in advance. The walks are “pay-
what-you-feel” -  I respectfully suggest £15 for this half day event. If t
his is not affordable for you – pay less – no questions asked. Equally\, i

this walk please email me with your name and telephone number and I will
send you details of where to make your donation. Once you have made the pa
yment I will confrm your place. No refunds will be given for this walk.\nW
here do we meet? We meet south of Cocklawburn Beach by the car parking are
a where the ice-cream van usually parks south of the first bay of Cocklawb
urn Beach. As the road drops down to Cocklawburn Beach there is a parking
area on your right\, go past this and the road bends around to the left to
wards the sea. There is then another parking area on your left as the road
swings around to the right - this is where we will meet. Grid reference N

DESCRIPTION:Thursday 6th August\, 2:00am to 5:00pm. This walk is run as an
extension to The Northumberland Coast National Landscape geodiversity walk
 s. \nWalk summary: The medieval remains of Tynemouth Priory still preside
over the headland marking the exit of the River Tyne into the North Sea. E
vidence of an Iron Age settlement speak of a history of human habitation g
oing back over 2000 years. It also looks south to the Permian limestone co
ast of County Durham (a geo-walks for another time) and north to the Carbo
niferous coalfields to be explored in this walk. \nFrom King Edward's Bay
through to Whitley Bay we can explore a remarkable sequence of sedimentary
rocks. These coal rich sequences which underpin the wealth of Newcastle\,
give an insight into a hot steamy past some 315 million years ago in the
Carboniferous Period. This was a period of time of great change as the lan
d surface became populated by a range of plants which allowed for coal for
mation and the emergence and diversification of four legged animals (tetra
pods) including amphibians and reptiles\, the precursors of dinosuars. \nA
t Tynemouth and Cullercoats we can also explore the lost 50 million years
when sedimentaion finished (or was eroded) towards the end of the  Carboni
ferous Period and when it started again early in the Permian Period. This
gives a fascinatiing insight into the massive tectonic changes which occur
ed during this period of time. These changes were the beginnings of contin
ental movement leading to the landmass configuration with we are familiar
in the cotemporary world.\nDo I need to book? This event has to be booked
